Dancs Maintains Lead Over Smith in Formula Russell Three Points Covers Top Three in Masters Competition
Sonoma, CA - Frank Dancs increased his lead to 34 points over Nathan Smith in the USAC Formula Russell Championship by winning his heat race on Saturday and finishing fourth on Sunday. Smith remains second in the series with two third place finishes from this weekend competition for a total score of 124. Toshi Kanamoto holds third place with 109 points just four markers ahead of kart racer Jason McCune. McCune scored his first win in Formula Russell on Sunday.
Pat McDowell continues to lead the Masters Division while holding down twelfth place in the championship standings with 70 points. However, Ken Snyder threatens to oust McDowell at the next event as he is just two points away from taking the lead in the "45 and over class." Third in the Masters Division is David Farley with 67 points.
Over 90 drivers are competing for a piece of the Formula Russell prize package which includes a free season in 2000 in the Russell/USAC Triple Crown Pro Series sponsored by Yokohama and valued at over $15,000. An additional incentive is the opportunity afforded to the top ten drivers to compete in the Jim Russell World Scholarship in England, where the top prize is a free season of racing in the Formula Vauxhall Series. Almost thirty drivers in the series are also competing in the Masters Division for a separate prize package that includes Yokohama tires, Sparco driving equipment, and a Jim Russell Driver Development program.
The next round of the USAC Formula Russell Championship is scheduled for August 14 and 15.
