Russell Road Scholars Hildebrand and Nelson Tie for Lead; Close Battle in Masters/Grand Masters Divisions Predicted
SONOMA, Calif. (February 23, 2004) Jim Russell Road Racing Scholarship winners J.R. Hildebrand and Cole Nelson are tied with 35 points each after the first two rounds of the SCCA Formula Russell Championship Series presented by Yokohama, held at Infineon Raceway on February 21 and 22.
16-year-old Hildebrand won Saturday's round and was runner up to Nelson on Sunday, while Nelson finished second on Saturday. Scott Meadow is currently in third place with 32 points, followed by Bruce Feldman, last year's champion, with 30 points. Steve Hill is fifth place with 28 points.
As a 2003 scholarship winner, Hildebrand received a free season of racing in 2004 plus the Jim Russell/RACER trophy, and Nelson received a half season of racing as his scholarship. Wes Boswell, the third scholarship winner of four races is scheduled to begin racing in Rounds 3 and 4.
Another Russell Road Scholar that won a free season of racing for drivers over 40, Tim Larin, took home a fourth place and a third place win. This is Larin's first season of racing.
Feldman and Hill battled all year in 2003 and it appears that this season will be no different. With only two points separating the two drivers and last year's championship being decided in Feldman's favor by just 13 points, these two veterans of the series will certainly give all the other drivers a great run for the overall championship.
Hill also currently leads the Masters Division. Behind him is Fernando Dias Ribeiro with 23 points and Larin with 22 points.
In the Grand Masters Championship, Chuck Hulse leads with 25 points over Ze'ev Drori with 18 points, and Jim Mustanich with 15 points. Mustanich bested Drori by one point for runner up in the 2003 Grand Masters Division.
Drivers will return for Rounds 3 and 4 on March 11 and 12.
