Sears Point Raceway, Sonoma, CA -- As the checkered flag came down on the 2000 USAC Formula Russell Championship Series, the top five drivers qualified to compete in the Jim Russell World Scholarship in England in 2001. Frank Dancs, Hillsborough, California, secured the championship in October. As champion, he won a seat in the 2001 Russell USAC Pro Series, as part of his prize package. Ross Fonferko, Wheaton, IL, took second place with 209 points. Fonferko, who took third place in last year's Graduate Run-Offs, also won the Rookie of the Year award. Landon Yee, San Rafael, CA, finished third with 202 points, tying with Russell's 2000 Triple Crown Champion Tim Barber. However, Yee racked up more first place finishes, giving him the third place in the series. All four drivers, plus Steve Hill, Los Gatos, CA, who finished fifth in the series with 116 points, will receive a free trip to the U.K. to compete against other Russell graduates for a chance to race in Europe. In the Masters Division, Ken Snyder took the championship with 103 points. Bud Moeller finished second with 101 points and Paul Luca finished third with 93 points. The Mechanics Challenge Division was won by Camilo Zurcher wtih 85 points. Garett Kleen finished second with 66 points; Brian McCullock was third with 58 points. Grant Dunning was named Most Improved Driver; Mel Spillman earned the Sportsman of the Yar award. The USAC Formula Russell Championship Series is an "arrive and drive" racing series presented by Jim Russell Racing Drivers School. The series is designed to provide the best value in motorsports competition and advance racing careers. Contenders compete in 10 race weekends at Sears Point Raceway, earning points toward a national USAC Championship.
