EDWARDS STORMS TO CONSECUTIVE VICTORIES IN FORMULA PALMER AUDI WINTERSERIES!
Today, Team USA Scholarship Winner Paul Edwards captured back-to-back victories in Rounds One and Two of the Formula Palmer Audi Winterseries at Snetterton in the U.K. The wins, which are the first for an American in Formula Palmer Audi, vault Edwards into the Championship lead with two rounds remaining at Brands Hatch. Edwards can now claim the Winterseries Championship with a single victory next weekend at Brands Hatch, because only a driver's top three finishes are scored.
In today's wet/dry 20 minute qualifying sessions, the 21-year-old Californian, managed position two for race one and pole for race two. The first of the two fifteen lap races began shortly after 1 P.M. local time and Edwards took control when he pressured pole winner Tom Sisley into a race ending mistake on lap eight. Edwards then stormed into the distance until he established a comfortable gap, ultimately winning by more than five seconds from Adam Carroll. In race two, Edwards masterfully controlled the pace, but took the checkered flag by a mere second from runner up Paul Munn after a late race caution bunched the field.
"Wow! This is a fantastic feeling," said Edwards who recently finished third in the EFDA Euroseries. "These cars are great to drive and I really enjoyed myself today. I didn't feel hurried in either race and was very comfortable in the car all day. I am really looking forward to next weekend's event at Brands Hatch and bringing home the Title."
"Today is just further affirmation of the Scholarship's value and importance," continued Edwards, who last year won the Formula Opel Winterseries with backing from the Team USA Scholarship. "The Scholarship has been invaluable in advancing my career by providing a great deal of publicity and allowing me to try out new Series. This year has been a real eye opener as to the potential of the Formula Palmer Audi Championship and I am going to give it a serious look for next season. I am truly grateful to Jeremy Shaw and the program's sponsors for this wonderful opportunity."
Edwards' teammates Jeff Simmons and Andy Lally also did well on their first visit to the Snetterton track with Simmons finishing eighth in each race and Lally managing a promising fifth in race one before a disappointing D.N.F. in race two.
The Team USA Scholarship was founded by journalist Jeremy Shaw and has helped a multitude of young American's compete in Europe. It is sponsored by Valvoline, CART, Tasman Motorsports, Audi, PacWest Racing, Mercedes-Benz USA, Road Racing Drivers Club, Klein Tools, Skip Barber Racing School, No Fear and Mitel Semiconductor.
