Bacheta second in thrilling qualifying

Matt Hamilton will start this afternoon's opening round of the 2007 Visma Formula Palmer Audi Championship from pole position after triumphing in a thrilling first qualifying session at Silverstone.

The 17-year-old blasted round the 1.64-mile National circuit in 55.057 seconds to secure the top spot, just two-hundredths of a second ahead of T Car champion Luciano Bacheta. After the session, Hamilton was delighted to have seen off his rivals on his FPA debut.

"It's the best start I could possibly hope for, but there's no doubt it's going to be a really tough fight in the race," said the Hertfordshire teenager.

Meanwhile, Bacheta was happy to secure a front-row start on a very competitive grid. "I was happy to get some consistent laps in, but with 22 cars going round in 55 seconds, getting through the traffic was the most important thing!"

On the second row, Stefan Wilson led the session for some time and eventually took third, his best FPA qualfying result to date. Jack Clarke will start fourth, with Tom Bradshaw scoring fifth place despite going off late on in the session. Jason Moore put in an impressive performance in sixth, with Andy Demetriou best of the veterans in seventh.

Former Formula BMW UK champion Tim Bridgman failed to recreate his Friday testing form and will start eighth, with the two Richards, Kent and Plant, competing the top 10. Once again the field was tightly packed, with less than one second covering the first 15 drivers.
