European Formula Palmer Audi
Round 9 - Spa Francorchamps (Belgium) - 10th June 2000
Junior Class championship leader Bruce Jouanny stunned the more experienced drivers by taking a brilliant lights to flag victory, just ahead of a rejuvenated Derek Hayes who stormed through from 7th place on the grid.
Pole position holder Tim Mullen was stripped of his times earlier after he broke pit lane regulations during qualifying the day before. He was forced to start the race from the end of the pit lane promoting Robbie Kerr into pole position. At the start Kerr faltered allowing Jouanny to leap into the lead with American Paul Edwards making an amazing start, finishing the first lap in 2nd place. Derek Hayes was third just ahead of Jacky van der Ende. Robbie Kerr's miserable race ended on lap one as he trundled into the pit lane with a broken front wing and bent suspension. Meanwhile, at the front Jouanny was opening a lead over Edwards, who was clearly holding Derek Hayes up. Hayes made a brilliant pass on the American and set off after Jouanny, catching him at the rate of 0.5 seconds a lap. Hayes was soon up behind the Frenchman but he was unable to find a way past. He made two efforts, the second putting him on the grass, which cost Hayes four seconds. He soon was back up behind the Performance sponsored car but it was too late and Jouanny took the first ever overall victory by a Junior Class driver. Jacky van der Ende was 3rd ahead of Richard Tarling and Paul Edwards.
A smiling Bruce Jouanny received his trophies on the grand prix podium. "I made a really good start, I moved before the start and had to brake before I went again. I got ahead and opened up a gap before Derek Hayes caught me up. He was really, really fast and I had no more boosts left. Derek went off towards the end, which reduce the pressure on me a little. I am really pleased with this result." <pre> 1 Bruce JOUANNY GB Performance 11 laps 2 Derek HAYES GB Hyperion +2.532 3 Jacky VAN DER ENDE NL Brask +6.718 4 Richard TARLING GB JSP +10.459 5 Paul EDWARDS USA Mockett +12.746 6 Bruno BESSON FR DAMS +12.877
