Two young guns driving in this year's European Formula Palmer Audi Championship have been nominated for the prestigious McLaren / Autosport / BRDC Young Driver Award. Robbie Kerr and Derek Hayes, both race winners this season, have been picked by a panel of national racing experts.
The six finalists will compete against each other in a variety of equipment, at a two-day shootout at Silverstone later this month to determine who will become the overall winner. Robbie and Derek will be competing for the grand prize of a test drive in a McLaren Formula 1 car, a £50,000 cheque and British Racing Drivers' Club membership. As well as all this, the eventual winner will receive international recognition, which will set their career firmly on the upward's path.
Past recipients of this award include McLaren-Mercedes F1 star David Coulthard, Champ Car ace Dario Franchitti and Jenson Button, who has impressed in the BMW-Williams Formula 1 team this season.
Robbie Kerr was extremely pleased to receive notification of his inclusion in the final six. "This is a great achievement to even be nominated. Past winners include such drivers as David Coulthard and Jenson Button, and they have all gone onto to bigger and greater things, so hopefully this will give me the chance to perform in front of the right people. Going to the prize giving at the Grosvenor House Hotel in December, will give me the chance to be introduced to the right people, such as Ron Dennis and the other Formula 1 bosses, and hopefully they will take note and something will come of it. Just being nominated is worth such a lot to me, but I am aiming to win."
Derek Hayes was also delighted to receive his nomination. "Obviously from the point of view being a nominee it's absolutely brilliant. I have to say for an award of this calibre I am quite honoured to be a nominee, giving me the chance to shoot it out for the overall win. I've just got to try my best on the day and if it's good enough it's good enough. At least I got to the last six. This is going to improve my chances of getting a top drive next year, especially if I win the award outright. I'm in contention for a top drive next season as it is, this would be the icing on the cake."
