Formula Ford 1600 front-runner, Gideon Cresswell is set to make his Formula Palmer Audi debut during the opening rounds of the winter series at Snetterton this weekend.
Despite a host of big names, including European Formula Palmer Audi veteran Paul Parsons and Caterham champion, Rob Jenkinson, Cresswell has showed well in provisional testing and is tipped to be among the pace setters when the campaign kicks off in Norfolk this Sunday.
Maidstone-based Cresswell is the current Formula Ford 1600 winter series champion and has been a title challenger in the Kent County Formula Ford series for the past two years, so is not short of racing experience. However, round one of four will mark a return to the track after a season long absence due to sponsorship difficulties.
"I'm really looking forward to getting into the car on Sunday," Cresswell admits. "I've done one race this season, back in June and finished third, so I expect to be a little rusty and not completely on the pace but it's just great to back in the cockpit after such a long absence. I'm actually going to be one of the least experienced drivers in the field despite having won a championship but I'm looking forward to the challenge.
"Wednesday's testing session was a bit of a mixed bag because everyone set their quickest laps during the morning when the track was drying out. Unfortunately, I was stuck in the garage for most of the session because my car was stuck in fifth gear. The afternoon session was wet but I managed to put quite a few laps in. I had a few problems with understeer in the slower corners, but I concentrated on getting used to the brakes which are really different to those in the Formula Fords. I've never raced slick and wings before so it should be quite an interesting few weeks!"
Cresswell will be backed throughout the Formula Palmer Audi winter series by Unorthodox Styles- who will be promoting their on-line music and fashion magazine spinemagazine.com- and returning sponsor Kerry Ingredients.
