Malaysia's Alex Yoong had his best weekend so far in Mine's round 9 of the 2000 Formula Nippon Championship as he had shown his ability to run with the top bracket of the championship contenders. After the best qualifying in seventh position on Saturday, Alex was 6th in the raceday's morning warm-up session. His time of 1m 17.264s was only 0.4 seconds adrift of pole sitter T.Takagi. Alex did not have a perfect start for the race when he lost 2 positions to round turn 1 in 9th spot but quickly made an outside move to retake 8th from Michigami in turn 2. Alex was right up with 7th position man, Hattori, when he lost his brakes. "The brake pedal just went straight to the floor board in a slow corner of lap 9. It was getting worse from lap 6 and I had to keep pumping it with my left foot throughout the lap. It was impossible to carry on without crashing." said Alex. Team Director, K. Homma and his crew could do nothing as they found out it was the brakes master cylinder which had failed. "I feel sorry for Alex as he was really in a strong position all weekend to score his first points and could even have made the podium if everything went well." Homma said. Despite this mis-fortune, Alex was upbeat, "The brake master cylinder failure is just one of those things in racing. It's nobody's fault. My team has been fantastic and I was primed to do well. I know we could have finished 4th today. I am still happy for the prospect of the final round in November and for the new season in 2001. We showed that we must be taken as serious contenders for 2001." T.Takagi won his eight race of nine this year with a total time of 1h 20m 48.792s, with S.Motoyama second at 1h 20m 50.410s and T.Matsuda third at 1h. 21m 18.713s. The final round (round 10) will be held on the 5th of November in Suzuka after the Japanese and Malaysian Grand Prix. Alex is sponsored by the fullflex RADIUS, TAG Heuer, Brylcreem, Pan Global Insurance, NeuroNet Malaysia and Malaysia Airlines. Team Malaysia, which Alex is running with is operated by the LeMans Co. with support from the Malaysian Ministry of Youth and Sports and Japan Race Promotions.
