In Saturdays free practice Michael achieved the third fastest time with a 1'12.455, but was far from happy with the balance or grip from his Team 5Zigen Reynard. During the first qualifying session, Team 5Zigen where still chasing a set up that suited the Sugo circuit and Michael was still using old tyres prior to making his first true qualifying run.
On his eleventh lap of the season Michael's car snapped into oversteer entering turn two and he valiantly controlled it getting on the power and trying to drive through the corner. Unfortunately there is little space at this corner and Michael hit the barriers, damaging the car beyond repair in time for the second qualifying session. " We where still working with old tyres to get a good balance in the car, I was pushing hard - but not harder than I had already been through this corner, and suddenly I had snap oversteer and lost the car. The damage is not major but cannot be finished in time for the second qualifying, so I guess I will be last on the grid". Michael commented.
Michael duly sat out second qualifying and started the race from seventeenth position.
As the race got underway, Michael made one of his usual demon starts and had gained four or five positions into the first corner. Using the strategy of pitting early, Michael entered the pits on Lap 2 and experienced problems with the limiter cutting out the engine, the team lost some time while re starting the engine and Michael's stop took 18 seconds. Rejoining in last position, Michael then drove a fantastic race driving through the field to collect fifth position and two valuable points.
"Today was fun, but a hell of a lot of work for just two points, but they are important as it increases my lead over Matsuda for second in the championship. Tora won again so he has made a big step on me now. His lead is 26 points but there are still 30 points out there so the championship is still possible. The team did a great job rebuilding the car and although we did well to get in the points, we still never found the balance or grip we needed to be competitive here" Michael commented Sunday evening.
