Fuji, Japan - Sun, 4th June 2000 - Malaysia's Alex Yoong drove a fantastic race to finish 9th from a near impossible 17th grid position in round 4 of the 2000 Formula Nippon Championship at the Fuji Speedway today. His achievement was all the more remarkable as he lost 2 positions at the start but gained positions from overtaking and lapping consistently amongst the top 5 times for most part of the 50 lap race at the 4.400km Fuji Circuit. Because of his consistent lap times he was able to gain track positions when the teams took to the pitlane for their compulsory tyres change. A delighted Alex paid tribute to his Team Malaysia Engineers and mechanics, "Full credit is to be given to my team who stood by me in the difficult time from not finishing in the first 3 rounds." "I like to also thank Japan Race Promotion and all the sponsors who have supported me. We can only get stronger for the remaining 6 races this year." Team Malaysia's Director K. Homma said, "Alex has shown us today what he is capable of and I am impressed by his lap times which compare very well with the top 5 finishers." Round 4 was won by Toranosuke Takagi from PIAA Team Nakajima with J. kisaka second and K. Kaneishi third. The sponsors of Alex Yoong and Team Malaysia are the Malaysian Ministry of Youth and Sports, Japan Race Promotion, LeMans Company of Japan, TAG Heuer, Malaysia Airlines, Brylcreem, Pan Global Insurance, HappySize and Fullflex Corporation.
