Rookie drivers Rick Kelly (Holden Young Lions/ Birrana Racing Reynard 94D) and Stewart McColl (NRC Racing Reynard 95D) rocked the Formula Holden establishment by claiming the valuable front row starting spots for tomorrow's opening round of the Holden Australian Drivers' Championship at Phillip Island earlier today.

Kelly's pole (1:25.2040) was not altogether unexpected, but McColl surprised everyone with his speed in the single twenty minute session and the pair were separated by just 0.26s. McColl's team mate - and fastest Friday runner - American Emerson Newton-John (NRC Racing Reynard 95D) filled third spot after topping the time sheets during the early part of the session. Newton-John's time was a only 0.03s slower than his younger team mate.

Giving the top four an international feel was Singaporean Christian Murchison (Visit Singapore/ Hocking Motorsport Reynard 98D), who delighted the Hocking Motorsport team with fourth fastest spot, his car getting faster with every outing. Another driver to impress was former Super Touring driver Alan Gurr (Telecell/ Konica Reynard 94D) who was happy to register some competitive laps after an engine failure during yesterday's practice sessions.

Chris Staff (Hocking Motorsport Reynard 98D) was sixth quickest, but still struggling with a serious handling malady ahead of Roger Oakeshott, who scored a career-best qualifying result and also claimed pole for the Silver Star category. Tomorrow's races will be contested over 18 laps duration and the interest at the front will be which first-time winner can score victory, with Murchison and Staff the only two drivers to have previously won a race.
