Kelly Sews Up Gold Star Championship
After trouncing the opposition yet again, Victorian teenager Rick Kelly wrapped up the 2001 Holden Australian Drivers' Championship in fine style at Oran Park today, and in doing so became the first driver to ever win the Formula Holden title in his rookie year. Kelly led all the way from his pole position and cleared off into the distance to win from another teenage star, NSW's Alan Gurr. Gurr took advantage of Singaporean Christian Murchison's failure to start the race to record his first runner-up spot, but could do nothing about the gap to the dominant Kelly.
Murchison, who challenged Kelly for pole yesterday, missed out on his chance to record the first win for his Hocking team and the added bonus of keeping the title alive when his car refused to start prior to the race. All eyes will be on the young charger when he starts today's second race from the rear of the grid.
Victoria's Peter Hill claimed a career-best third place after making a lightning getaway to fill second at the start, but fell to Gurr and Terry Clearihan before passing Clearihan in yet another wheel-to-wheel battle with the Canberra based Ralt driver. Clearihan spun trying to re-challenge Hill, but recovered to claim Silver Star honours and in doing so reduced the margin to SS Championship leader Ian Peters to a solitary point. Peters came home fifth ahead of Roger Oakeshott, who slipped to the rear of the field after a slow start.
With Kelly putting the championship out of reach with his eighth win from eleven starts, this afternoon's race could see him attempt to claim the outright lap record for the Oran Park circuit, which currently stands at 1:01.67s. Although if Murchison can make a rapid getaway from the rear he may have somewhat more to contend with. <pre> Race 1 Results
