At the completion of a qualifying session that finished with a flurry of activity at the top of the leader board, current championship leader Rick Kelly claimed pole position for the sixth round of the 2001 Holden Australian Drivers' Championship. Eighteen-year-old Kelly flew around the windswept and freezing cold Oran Park circuit to take his fourth pole of the year, finishing the session 0.23s ahead of Singapore's Christian Murchison.
Murchison ousted NSW's Alan Gurr for second on his final flying lap in a performance that earned the plaudits of onlookers. The young Singaporean driver suffered a high-speed accident during yesterday's practice sessions and was driving the spare Hocking Motorsport machine, despite head and neck soreness, and simply flew from the word go. Second spot was just reward for his hard-working crew and he will be out to score a win tomorrow to keep his slim championship hopes alive.
Gurr, fastest yesterday in the rain, finished third fastest just 0.03s behind 'Murcho' and the 19-year-old improved his time on his final flying lap, but not his position. Peter Hill claimed fourth fastest and looks destined for a lonely race, with his times around two seconds off the flying trio of youngsters ahead of him, but a full second in front of fifth placed Roger Oakeshott, who claimed the Silver Star pole with a strong 1:05.79s lap. Rounding out the thin seven-car entry were Canberra's Terry Clearihan and Silver Star Championship leader Ian Peters.
Formula Holdens take to the track on Sunday for two 18 lap races at 10:50 and 14:15.
