March 24, 2001 - NRC Racing Formula Holden rookie drivers Stewart McColl and Emerson Newton-John have set the second and third fastest lap times during qualifying for the opening round of the Formula Holden Championship.

21 year old McColl from Newcastle (NSW) drove his NRC Racing Reynard 95D at a constantly improving pace throughout the 20 minute session, held in cool and cloudy conditions. McColl's fastest lap of 1:25.4713s was just over 2/10ths of a second behind the pole position time set by Victorian rookie Rick Kelly (1:25.2040s).

McColl's 26 year old team mate, Emerson Newton-John, powered his Formula Holden to the third fastest time of the session, giving the American a second row start in his Australian racing debut tomorrow. His fastest lap of 1:25.5002 was 3/100ths of a second behind his team mate.

The top three qualifiers hold a 1.2 second gap over the rest of the field.

Stewart McColl - "I was pleased with our qualifying set up, I think the only thing I lacked during the session was my experience level. I was getting faster with every lap, but it wasn't enough for pole. I think that we have a great car for the races tomorrow."

Emerson Newton-John - "It was a good session and our set-up was good, but I had a bit of understeer at Siberia which was messing up my run to Lukey Heights - but the car was good everywhere else. I am disappointed to not be on pole as there wasn't much in it - but I am happy to be starting from the second row for my first Australian race."

The NRC Racing Formula Holden team will be on track tomorrow (Sunday, March 25) for two14 lap races at 12:30pm and 2:15pm.
