2000 Holden Australian Drivers Championship
Mallala Motorsport Park, South Australia
Round 8 Race 1
27th August 2000
Christian Murchison did all he could to keep his slim championship hopes alive when he won race one of the final round of the Holden Australian Driver's Championship at Mallala early this afternoon, but Simon Wills finished in third spot, and in doing, so wrapped up his second successive CAMS Gold Star crown. At the start Murchison and Wills were split by the fast-starting Matthew Halliday, who blasted from his fourth grid spot to claim second before the first turn, and thereafter held a Wills at bay to equal his career best of second place. Halliday will be hoping for another rocket start in this afternoon's 15 lap final race and desperately wants to claim his first win.
Murchison's team mate Dale Brede came home fourth after a spirited dice with Paul Dumbrell, which saw Dumbrell fall out of his hard-earned fourth when his engine failed with two laps remaining. Behind the top four, there was action aplenty, with Peter Hill and LeRoy Stevenson - the latter from the rear of grid - enjoying a furious side-by-side dice for a number of laps. Stevenson eventually secured fifth when Hill spun on the second last lap when he stumbled on some slower traffic. It wasn't all bad news for Hill, as he wrapped up the Silver Star Championship and was right in the battle for Gold Star honours.
Steve Owen finished sixth and was the only Hocking Motorsport driver to make it to the line after his debutante team mate Stuart Kostera was eliminated in a Turn Two skirmish. Ian Peters finished seventh and was the first Silver Star car home ahead of veteran Stan Keen, making his first appearance for the year on his home circuit. Hill recovered for ninth ahead of Terry Clearihan, Mark Ellis, Les Crampton and Rohan Carrig.
This afternoon's race will be eagerly awaited as with the championship over it will be a 'gloves off' battle between Murchison, Wills and Halliday. Murchison wants his fifth season win, Wills wants to prove he's the best and Halliday is still chastened by the fact that he was robbed of a worthy SA victory when a technical infringement ousted him from the top podium spot on the streets of Adelaide back in April.
