Rick Kelly (Holden Young Lions/ Birrana Racing Reynard 94D) stamped his authority on the opening round of the 2001 Holden Australian Drivers' Championship at Phillip Island by romping to an impressive 6.4s race two victory, and in doing so, ensured the top V8 teams sat up and took notice. This event marked Kelly's Gold Star debut and he took maximum points after a faultless display. Second place in race two went to Stewart McColl (NRC Racing Reynard 95D), who claimed second overall in what was also his first FH race. McColl set the race's fastest lap and could feel frustrated that a pair of botched starts ruined his chance to challenge former Formula Ford adversary Kelly.

Christian Murchison (Racing for Singapore/ Hocking Motorsport Reynard 98D) claimed third overall after running in second spot for most of the race, but had to give best to the charging McColl late in the 14 lap journey. Peter Hill (M ONE 11/ Murphy Motorsport Reynard 95D) registered a career-best fourth spot after a lonely race ahead of Doctor Roger Oakeshott, also in a career-best fifth place and winner of Silver Star spoils on the day.

Race one's fast man, NRC's Emerson Newton-John failed to finish after what appeared to be a clutch or gear selection problem, while Chris Staff pulled off the circuit in the second Hocking machine with water spewing from the rear of his car, although not before performing a quick high-speed 360 degree spin at the notorious Lukey Heights section of the circuit. Paul Stephenson and Ian Peters rounded out the depleted field to come home in sixth and seventh spots respectively.

Round two of the championship will take place on the streets of Adelaide in two weeks time and fans can look forward to another street-fight with two-time champion Simon Wills scheduled to make a welcome return to the championship.
