McCOLL 4TH IN SECOND ADELAIDE STREET RACE
April 8, 2001 - NRC Racing Formula Holden driver Stewart McColl finished 4th after an exciting and dramatic second Clipsal 500 Formula Holden street race. The Newcastle driver led the 15 lap race from half way through the first lap, engaging in an exciting nose to tail battle with Kiwi Simon Wills and Sydney driver Alan Gurr. Team mate Emerson Newton-John raced from the back of the field to as high as fifth but an accident on the last lap of the race ended his chances of gaining any points in Adelaide.
McColl displayed brilliant defensive driving during his tenure at the lead of the race until lap 6 when he spun after a major bump knocked the car into neutral, blocking the centre of the track and leaving the close following Simon Wills with no choice but to run over the NRC Racing driver's front wing and take the lead of the race. Alan Gurr and Rick Kelly followed Wills in second and third, McColl blasting his Motorola sponsored Reynard 95D back into the race in 4th position. He held this position all the way to the chequered flag - despite having no bonnet and reduced downforce due to the damaged front wing.
Newton-John powered his fully re-built and multi-coloured Reynard 95D (due to a combination of spare and borrowed body panels and a heap of race tape and band aids..) to fifth position from the back of the field, but his race was curtailed on the final lap - the American crashing into a barrier after finding oil behind Terry Clearihan.
Stewart McColl - "I raced into the corner on the inside and hit a major bump that knocked the gearbox into neutral. When I applied power into the corner as usual I had no drive and in my haste I pulled second gear with the revs too high and spun. It was a shame as I was enjoying the race, I was comfortable with Simon behind me and other than making a mistake I was determined not to let him past. I have to thank NRC Racing, Motorola, Marsh Insurance, Raceart and my parents for their support which allowed me compete at this great event."
Emerson Newton-John - "I was having difficulty with gear selection from the start of the race and I had a mid race spin due to that. I got back onto the track hoping to simply finish the race and gain as many points as possible, but I came upon a slower car with oil blowing everywhere and went straight off in his oil ending my race on the last lap. Despite walking away unscathed from yesterday's crash - the weekend was a complete disaster. I have to thank my hard working crew at NRC Racing for their efforts that enabled me to compete in one of the two races at the Clipsal 500.
