Round 2 Race 2 Report - Adelaide Street Circuit, 8th April 2001
Wills wins war on wheels
The second Formula Holden event at Adelaide's Clipsal 500 took up where yesterday's V8 Supercar race left off, with Simon Wills charging through a field of spinners and sinners to take victory from tenth position on the grid. Wills, the category's most successful driver, who was making a guest appearance with his former Birrana Team, drove like a 'man-possessed' to win, breaking his own lap record in the process. Wills left the mark at 1:19.955s after braking it on five consecutive laps and now owns an outright lap record that may never be broken.
Rick Kelly came home second after spinning out of the lead on lap two. Kelly passing Alan Gurr for the spot on the penultimate lap in a brave chicane-hopping manoeuvre. Kelly took overall honours and drove well to recover from his spin and was lucky not to be hit the raging battle right behind him. Gurr's third was a fine result for the 19-year-old and he will surely be one to watch in future events. Stewart McColl, who also spun out of a lead he looked like keeping but claimed fourth place and second overall after fending off the advances of Wills for four laps. Wills actually ran over McColl's front wing assembly, but survived a possible puncture.
There was action right through the field, with Christian Murchison losing a front wing assembly, Emerson Newton-John also had wing damage as did McColl. Newton-John's miserable weekend continued when he poked his NRC machine's nose into the barriers on the penultimate lap. That he was able to take the start at all was a miracle after his huge qualifying crash and he looked destined to repay his team with a strong fifth, but it was not to be. Peter Hill claimed sixth, Terry Clearihan seventh, Rohan Carrig eighth and Murchison - after a pit stop - came home in ninth. Kelly now has a handy points lead over McColl with the next round at Darwin's Hidden Valley circuit in May.
