Augusto Farfus tests the official Mercedes DTM works car
Pontremoli - Italy, Wednesday, 27 August 2003- 19-year-old Parana born Brazilian driver Augusto Farfus was officially invited by the Mercedes works team to test last year's HWA Mercedes Vodafone works car on the Hockenheim Junior track in Germany yesterday.
Farfus has won three of the six European F3000 races held so far in 2003, and has a clear lead in the championship with three rounds remaining.
Adriano Morini, owner of the Italian Draco F3000 team is also Augusto Farfus's manager and was present during the test. He commented: "It was a great opportunity for Augusto Farfus to be able to drive this official Mercedes test with all the other top drivers including German Champion Bernd Schneider. I have the feeling that Augusto Farfus impressed the General Manager of HWA, the DTM Racing Department from Mercedes, Hans-Jurgen MATTHEIS Team with his excellent technical feed back. However, it took some time for Augusto to get used to the new high-tech technology that we do not use in the F3000 single seaters races in the European F3000 Championship.
Augusto Farfus: "It was a long and useful experience for me as a driver. Overall, the test went well. I was very surprised that the car was so easy to drive, well-balanced, and easy to understand. However, it has been a long and hot day. Most of the time the temperature on the Hockenheim track was above 30 degrees. I drove 111 laps during the day. My best lap time was 1m 01.250.
"I wish that this test will enable the Mercedes works team and Hans Juergen MATTHEIS (Head of the HWA DTM Racing Department at Mercedes) to keep a door open for me in the future. I would like very much to continue making efforts to discover the full power of this 2002 car and be given the chance to race some more in order to fully understand the power and the driveability of the car as the Championship looks incredibly interesting and challenging with a lot of top drivers."
