New motorsport team sibsport, together with the team's owner/driver Simon Blanckley from Durham, had a positive weekend competing in their first ever Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) race meeting after finishing in all three races at Brands Hatch, Kent, last Sunday.
The team was formed just over two months ago and the resulting lack of extensive testing mileage in the car meant that the team's expectations for the opening rounds were realistic - finish all the races and collect more data about the car. These aims were achieved following a clean and consistent weekend and, despite slightly disappointing results of two sixteenth places and a fourteenth, Blanckley avoided many incidents and acquitted himself well to the challenge of the BTCC, which features some of the best touring car drivers in the world.
The team - run by Graham Hathaway Engineering of Maldon, Essex - head off for round five, six and seven at the Rockingham Motor Speedway, near Corby, on April 22nd with a positive platform to build on after the opening weekend.
Simon Blanckley (Durham), owner/driver
"I'm still getting used to the car and I didn't make the best of starts in any of the races and in race three the tyres faded quickly. Having said that, overall it was a good weekend considering it was our first in the BTCC. We finished all the races, had no real problems, set consistent lap times all day and got a lot of exposure for our sponsors. I really enjoyed my debut weekend."
Graham Hathaway, team manger
"The weekend was as good as could be expected. It's clear Simon has the credentials to be on the same grid as some of the best drivers in the business. We just need more running in the car but the technical help we've received from Team Dynamics (who built sibsport's Honda Integra last year and won the championship) has been invaluable. I'm sure we can break into the top ten soon enough."
