D'Agostino tries best, but is unlucky at Castle Combe in tricky conditions
Wiltshire, England - Young American Joe D'Agostino had a tough outing as the UK Formula Ford Championship held the 9th and 10th Rounds of the series at the Castle Combe circuit in Wiltshire on the 19-20 June. The weather would play a big role in this weekend's results and races.
For qualifying D'Agostino decided to go out straightaway and try to put in his best lap right away, this unfortunately was a mistake as the track became faster at the end of the session leaving D'Agostino in 9th position for both races.
For Race 1 D'Agostino made a strong getaway off the line and exited the first corner in 5th position, but it did not stay long as the red flag came out due to an incident on the first lap. After a complete restart D'Agostino slotted into the 7th position and began challenging to move further up the field. Things would soon become soggy as a light rain fell, with only a few laps before the finish D'Agostino was caught out by a late spinner who came back across and damaged the suspension forcing D'Agostino to retire.
In Race 2 the rain came lashing down and visibility was little to none. D'Agostino again made a fine start and would be up to 5th before the first corner, unlucky again D'Agostino made a mistake braking too late for the first turn, sliding off and losing several places before being able to rejoin. The rain continued to fall and D'Agostino found visibility and conditions extremely difficult, the race eventually was red flagged due to the conditions and D'Agostino had to settle for 12th place.
"Although the results this weekend were not what I had hoped for, the important thing is that I learned and can take something away from Castle Combe which will only make me a stronger and better driver in the future. I think that my pace was there but it was a combination of a few mistakes and being unlucky that ultimately hampered the weekend. That is racing sometimes and so now it's upwards and onwards as we prepare for the next race at Oulton Park."
D'Agostino slips from the Scholarship Class points lead to 2nd position for the first time this season but remains in 6th position in the Overall Championship standings. The 11th and 12th rounds of the 2004 UK Formula Ford Championship will be July 18-19 at the Oulton Park circuit.
D'Agostino would like to thank Team JLR and all of his sponsors: Arai Helmets, Skip Barber Racing School, Sparco, The Mayes Group, and all of his personal sponsors.
