Makela Makes it two for Two at Combe
Valle Makela took his second UK Formula Ford Championship race victory of the weekend this afternoon (June 20), extending his lead in the series over Daniel Clarke.
Torrential weather conditions made the race difficult for the entire field as an already wet track became flooded as heavy rain began to fall mid-way through the 15 lap event.
Sebastian Hohenthal took the lead at the start of the race and looked like he might pick up his first race win of the year as Makela struggled to find a way past Charlie Kimball.
It took until lap five before he found his way into second place and two laps later the Finn made slight contact with Hohenthal's rear at Bobbies chicane and took the lead. The contact moved Hohenthal down into third place and out of contention as the conditions deteriorated.
"I made a poor start but after that everything went well and I am pleased to be on the top step again," said Makela.
Kimball was pleased with second place, especially with a lack of wet weather running time before this weekend.
"I couldn't see a lot because of the spray. I just tried to stay in touch with Makela and see what happened. I'm pleased with the result as we don't do much wet weather racing in the US!" said Kimball.
Daniel Clarke was able to keep his title hopes going with fourth pace, just ahead of a great drive by Charlie Donnelly. The Irishman bounced back from rolling his car in the opening race of the weekend to score a well-deserved fifth place.
Neil Doran had a lonely race to sixth place after Indian racer Suk Sandher spun down the order, ending his race in eighth position.
