July 15th - Mondello Park, Kildare. Paul Sammin's first win of the season in the 2000 Formula Vee Championship can't be too far away if his present run of form is anything to go by. In this race held on Mondello's International Circuit, the Finn Auctioneers Sheane '00 driver recorded his best result of the season with a fine second place finish despite experiencing some mechanical difficulties with the 1600 cc VW powered single seater.
The Louisburgh native's race weekend began on a high note having secured backing from Mayo based Graphic Design & Livery specialists Rapid Designs, Westport. As it was only the second time this season that the International Circuit was used, many drivers had the opportunity to test the middle distance track the day before official qualifying. Although Paul did not partake in the test session, he qualified on the second row of the grid and only for a slight mistake on the final run, could have topped pole position man, Ed O'Connor.
Paul went into the race full of confidence and was determined to continue this string of top five finishes. On the green light, the Amagruss Sensors/Clonlee Mushrooms backed driver strictly obeyed the no overtaking rule on Corners 1 and 2 and immediately entered a tremendous battle with fellow Mayo & District Motorsport Club member Oisin Bergin for second place. Sammin took that coveted position after lap 3, and held on to second for the remaining 9 laps holding off the challenge of Peter Le Bas in the process. But it wasn't all plain sailing though as throughout the final part of the race persistent steering problems stemming from a shattered wheel hub caused some anxious moments for Paul en route to the chequered flag.
Paul, tired and delighted was obviously ecstatic after the record run. "Yes" he said, "I'm thrilled with this second place. At last my year in the top-flight category is coming good. Here's to the remainder of the season."
