Wilmette, IL (September 4th, 2001) This Labor Day weekend the festivities started early Friday morning when over one hundred drivers drove their race vehicles through downtown Crandon for the town's annual Labor Day parade. Lining the streets of Crandon were Single Buggies all the way up to the big Pro 4 trucks. With the crews competing in different contests all morning (fastest wheel change, fastest truck pushing, etc.) and drivers signing autographs, everyone was excited, anticipating the arrival of noon. Promptly at mid-day the town siren went off and the fireworks exploded to signal the start of the parade. What with candy flying everywhere and the kids going absolutely NUTS, the parade was better than ever! Later that afternoon the Borg Warner time trials were ready to begin. The big Pro 2 and Pro 4 trucks headed for the starting line and then they were off Lap after lap the trucks began pulling extremely fast times and the topic of conversation became whether or not the track record for fastest lap might be broken. It finally fell to Jason Baldwin. The track was perfect and put the lap of a lifetime together and broke a three-year record held by Jamie Flannery by four hundredths (4/100) of a second. Friday night American Racing Custom Wheels held a driver's appreciation dinner. Cooking on Federico's new business partner's product, The Go Go Grill from VBroiler, American Racing fed over THREE HUNDRED racers and crew members!

SATURDAY'S RACE, ROUND #13

Saturday morning we were all expecting great weather and got it. Today's racing was going to be exciting! Sixteen trucks lined up for another 'land rush' type start, got the green flag and headed for the first turn flat out in fourth gear! Federico came out of that first turn in seventh position. Working his way up through the field into third place, Federico went to work trying to hold off points leader Jeff Kincaid. Chad Hord had a chance to pull away from Steven and Kincaid, who were dicing with each other for position. Fighting lap after lap with Kincaid, Federico entered the gravel pit a little too hot. "I pushed really bad going into the gravel pit and gave Jeff the opportunity to slam the door on me. It was a good move by Jeff who took full advantage of the opportunity". Federico finished the race fourth. "We had a good race today but I will need to press a little harder tomorrow as we need a better finish."

SUNDAY'S RACE, ROUND #14

Round 14 was ready to begin Sunday morning and thirteen trucks (three were unable to be repaired from Saturday's shunts and breakage) lined up for the start. Federico left the gate in good position and came out of the first turn in third place. Going over the 'Barn Jump', Federico left the door open just a bit and Art Schmitt slammed into Federico to make a pass. "I'm becoming increasingly annoyed at (with?) Art for continually making such aggressive moves. This time he hit me so hard it whacked my steering way off. I felt something was wrong with the truck so I tried to back off a little." With one lap left in the race, Federico went over the 'Barn Jump' and broke his pitman arm. Running up the outside bank, Federico flipped his truck for the first time. "We finished sixth to day, but the hard thing to swallow was having to give up second spot in the points championship."

EPILOGUE

Steven is still leading the Kumbo Tire 'Rookie of the Year' over Chad Hord by 8 points. "Rounds 15 and 16 in Topeka are going to be super important. Our goal from the start of the season was to run in the top eight and win the Kumbo Tire 'Rookie of the Year' award."
