Crandon track freshens up as it sets to open '02 Off-Road season.

CRANDON, WI -- Action behind the scenes at Crandon Raceway is fast and furious as the heralded off-road track sets to kickoff its 33rd year of off-road racing. New at the track in 2002 is the addition of a permanent starter's control and administration building, a new concert stage, a new sponsor of Crandon's infamous "Gravel Pit Turn", the addition of a promenient auto systems supplier as a major track sponsor, a new racing class, and the first visit to the track by the current Wisconsin Governor.

The honorable Scott McCallum has reserved his ticket for the June 22-23 Forest County Potawatomi Brush Run Races at Crandon. The Wisconsin Governor will be a special VIP guest at the track and also award the Governor's Cup to the winner of the race on Sunday, June 23. Previous Governor Tommy Thompson, now a Cabinet member in the White House, visited the track in 1994.

In the Crandon exhibit area, Ford Motor and Bergstrom Ford have combined to bring a massive, interactive display of Ford vehicles, race technology and interactive games for Crandon fans to enjoy between races. The exhibits will anchor both ends of Crandon's exhibit area, from the blue Ford pavilion to the Hill Concessions Stands. Sandwiched in-between will be exhibits from Amsoil, Miller Electric Welders, and others.

Crandon's famous "Gravel Pit" Turn 3 has a new sponsor -- Cellcom. A giant Cellcom tower has been positioned on the inside of the famous turn where "rock seems to grow," as racers say. Cellcom has been a long-time Crandon Raceway sponsor and is also the "official cellular service" of the race track.

One of the world's largest and most promenient suppliers of components to light duty pickup truck and sport utility vehicle manufacturers -- American Axle & Manfacturing of Detroit -- has signed on as a major sponsor at Crandon. AAM joins savvy automotive OEM suppliers such as BorgWarner, Tenneco Automotive, Goodyear and others as key sponsors at Crandon Raceway.

A new starting line administrative building has been constructed at Crandon -- the 400-square-foot concrete block facility, complete with air conditioning -- is located at Crandon's famous Oklahoma Land Rush Starting Line. Also new is a 10 foot high, 30-by-22 foot concert stage to be located on-track for post-race evening concerts at Crandon.

And, two notable racers have made historic marks at Crandon Raceway for the June race. In the new Johnsonville Sausage Formula 4x4 class, racer Rich Hiebing, Wabeno,WI, is the first competitor to register to race the new class. The first Formula 4x4 racer to enter a "F4x4" truck in the Forest County Potawatomi Governor's Cup race is long-time Crandon racer Jerry Bundy, Tolland, CT. Bundy Motors also races a Sportman 2 pickup truck driven by Gordon Zima, also of Tolland, CT. Bundy Motors race vehicles will compete in six events at Crandon over the weekend.

Crandon fans can also welcome Carl "The Truth" Renezeder (Laguna Beach, CA) to the high performance 4x4 truck class. Renezeder has raced 2-wheel drive pickups for the past two years. He will continue to race in the Pro 2 class but has also moved up to the Pro 4 class. He will be racing a total of five events for the weekend. And joining Curt LeDuc -- the "Duke of Wisconsin" -- is Curt's son, Kyle LeDuc. While Pop LeDuc races in the Pro 4x4 class, Kyle is a rookie in the Pro Lite compact pickup truck class. The father and son team reside in Cherry Valley, CA.

Key track sponsors include the Forest County Potawatomi, BorgWarner, Miller Lite, American Axle & Manufacturing, Johnsonville Sausage, Trail Master, Indian Springs Lodge, Coca-Cola, Rancho, Miller Electric Welders, 4 Wheel Parts Performance Centers, Associated Bank, KC Hilites, BF Goodrich, Bergstrom Ford, Amsoil, U.S. Smokeless Tobacco, Superior Diesel, Parsons Chevrolet, Goodyear, Wisconsin Aluminum Foundry, Lucas, Ford Trucks, Cellcom, Precision Gear, Potawatomi Bingo Northern Lights Casino, Toyota Racing Development, Kumho Tires, GM Hydra-Matic, Baumgart Tire (Appleton, WI), among others.

The Forest County Potawatomi Brush Run Races are Saturday and Sunday, June 22-23 at Crandon Raceway. The races are the first of three events at Crandon this year. Later this year, the track will host the 2nd annual Xtreme Thunderfest, sponsored by Forest County Potawatomi, on Friday evening, August 30. This will be followed by the annual BorgWarner World Championship Off-Road Race on August 31-September 1, 2002.
