The 2002 Tonopah "300" takes a turn to the north,
Las Vegas, NV - The Best In The Desert Racing Association's 2002 - "Silver State Series" off-road race, the Tonopah "300" is set for August 9,10, 11, 2002, in the historic mining town of Tonopah, Nevada. Billed as "An Epic Nevada Off-Road Race" the racecourse travels through some of the most historic land in Nevada, actually taking a turn to the North this year! The all-new Tonopah "300" will race trough Gabbs, Nevada, a historic mining community. Not since 1985 has anyone raced through Gabbs, the last race being the Nevada "500." From the fun, challenging, three-hundred mile racecourse, and the absolutely gorgeous new scenic course through three historic ghost towns, an adventure is in store for everyone!
Casey Folks, Director of Best In The Desert Racing Association, has laid out an incredible course this year. Casey Folks says, "This is one of the best Tonopah "300" courses I have ever laid out. The racecourse travels through some unbelievably colorful parts of Nevada. The mostly all-new course travels through three historic Nevada ghost towns; Big Smoky, Goldyke and Pactolus, and of course Gabbs, where Premier Mine is still active mining Magnesium. Pit # 3 is right in the center of Gabbs and I think the racers and support crews are going to love it!"
Defending champions in the 1500 Unlimited Car Class and Overall Champs are the Weyhrich Brothers, Gary and Mark, (Troutdale, OR) who are not planning on giving up the title without a fight, a fast one at that! Right behind them will be Sam Berri (Murphy's, CA) 2000 Defending Champion, Casey Jones (Ely, NV) and Kory Scheeler (Las Vegas, NV.) Defending Champion in the 1400 Trick Truck Class is Damon and Casey Jefferies (Oak Hills, CA), who are currently leading the Overall Points with his awesome Ford F-150 Trick Truck, make sure to see the unbelievable truck as it passes through contingency! The Jefferies Team has some tough competition this year with the fast and steady Kyle Taylor (San Jacinto, CA) and Dave Westham (Las Vegas, NV) right behind him, they have all been coming within seconds of each other all year long!
Defending Champion in the Professional Motorcycle Division is Steve Hengeveld, riding for American Honda. This team is always consistent, fast and just plain fun to watch ride! Coming in a close second was Shane Esposito, riding for Team Green Kawasaki. This year Esposito almost seems unbeatable, leading the Year Championship with 1081 points with Ty Davis in a close second with 1015 total points. You can bet this is going to be a tough race!
Defending Champion in the Quad Division is Jimmy Stephensen (Las Vegas, NV). The Quad race is neck in neck this year, the Stephensen Team and the Eichner Team have been within seconds of each other all year. At this point in time Doug Eichner is leading the Overall Year Championship with 885 total points and Jimmy Stephensen has 805, this Quad Championship is not going to be decided until the Las Vegas "200", I wouldn't take any bets on these two!
