SMD Team Ready to Tackle Terrible's
Heber, Calif. (April 13, 2006) - According to owner Steve Scaroni, the SMD Motorsports team is "locked and loaded" heading into next month's Terrible's Town 250, the second truck event of the 2006 Best in the Desert series. Scaroni and SMD Motorsports field the No. 27 Ford F-150 truck, piloted by his sons, Matt and David.
"We tested extensively last month and have spent a lot of time strategizing, managing, organizing spare parts, and setting up the SMD chase trucks, " said Steve Scaroni. "From what we learned in testing, we have made some significant changes to the truck, including changes to our drivetrain components. We also changed our suspension set up. We feel blessed and confident heading into the event, and are expecting to win."
The eighth-annual Terrible's Town 250 will be held Saturday, April 29, 2006, in Pahrump, Nevada (located 60 miles Northwest of Las Vegas on Highway 160). The race, which follows a 250-mile loop, will start North of Pahrump and finish at the Terrible's Town Casino right off Highway-160. The Motorcycles and Quads will start at approximately 6 a.m. and the Cars and Trucks will start at approximately 9:30 a.m.
The event's $40,000 guaranteed total purse makes the race, "The Richest Off- Road Race in Nevada." A $10,000 check will be awarded to the first overall Car/Truck winner, $5,000 to the first overall Pro Motorcycle winner, and $5,000 to the first overall Pro Quad winner. The remainder of the prize money will be distributed amongst class finishers. Due to the large purse, a record number of entries are expected to compete in this year's event.
"This is just another step in our overall plan of becoming the best off- road Trophy Truck racing team that we can be," said Matt Scaroni, the oldest son. "We have the drive, the talent, the backing and the experience to win. With all of our preparation and planning, we feel confident heading into the race. We are looking for great results in Nevada, as well as for the remainder of 2006."
Besides the Terrible's Town 250, SMD Motorsports has its sites set on the 2006 Best in the Desert championship. The team currently sits in 13th place, with 63 points, only 27 points behind leader Robby Gordon.
"We know that we have to be successful in all aspects of the race program, not just the driving part, if we expect to win races and a championship" said David Scaroni, the youngest son. "It takes more than just great driving skills to win a race. The Terrible's Town 250 will test all of them - preparation, determination, skill, patience and planning. It takes an all- around effort to win. I know we have it and hopefully the results will reflect our efforts."
"The course is a true, grueling, off-road course," Matt said. "It is technical and has a lot of variety, and it will wear you down, both physically and mentally, if you let it. Although it is in our nature to go as fast as we can, we've got to be patient and take care of our equipment in certain areas and know when to go all out in others. That's going to be a key to winning this race."
"Although this is a race that is shorter than the ones we normally compete in, it doesn't make it any less challenging," David added. "We will be relying on the proven durability of our BFGoodrich Tires throughout the race, as this race is notorious for punishing tires due to the infinite number of rocks that are strewn throughout the race course."
