Cowie, Bellemeur Earn Wins at Woodburn
WOODBURN, Ore. -- Racing is complete at the 30th Annual Les Schwab challenge NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series. Shawn Cowie outran the field in Top Alcohol Dragster, while Sean Bellemeur earned a spot in the winner's circle in Top Alcohol Funny Car.
Cowie of Richmond, B.C, outlasted his competitors and was crowned the champion in Top Alcohol Dragster having run a final pass of 5.435 seconds at 263.15 mph. In the final, Cowie was up against Thomas Bayer of Fontana, Calif., who had problems at the start and finished with a pass of 7.079 seconds at 112.55 mph.
Bellemeur of Fullerton, Calif., went up against defending Northwest Division champion Brian Hough of Junction City, Ore., in the final. Hough, however, got a little too anxious at the start and fouled allowing Bellemeur to coast to the win, letting off the gas and finishing with a time of 8.861 seconds at 97.42 mph.
Comp Eliminator pilot J.D. Zink of Chico, Calif., finished with a pass of 6.892 seconds at 192.80 mph to defeat Jeff Lane of North Bend, Wash. Also crowned champion was Jody Lang of Puyallup, Wash., who drove his '81 Malibu to victory over Bob Fordyce of Vista, Calif., in Super Stock. Taking the win in Stock Eliminator was Richland, Wash., resident Jim Waldo making a pass of 10.251 seconds at 126.13 mph and defeating Sean Kennedy of Bremerton, Wash.
Anthony Castillo of Grandview, Wash., powered passed Craig Blaisdell of Redding, Calif., with a time of 8.947 seconds at 164.92 mph to take home the Super Comp Trophy. Super Gas racer Wayne Linder Jr. of Outlook, Wash., outran the field beating Mike Coltrin of Boise, Idaho, while in Super Street Kurt Gross of Oregon City, Ore., scored the win over Bob Landry of Tacoma, Wash with a time of 10.909 seconds at 129.47 mph.
The Top Dragster champion was Doug Arthur of Auburn, Wash., while driving a '37 Chevy finished with a pass of 7.557 seconds at 175.43 mph to defeat Paul Nero of Eugene, Ore. Bothell, Wash., racer Randy Johnson battled it out with Todd Fricke of Pasco, Wash., and finished in the winner's circle with a time of 7.615 seconds at 176.19 mph. On top in the Sportsman Motorcycle category presented by Harley Davidson was John Widmann of Garberville, Calif. Widman ran a time of 8.783 seconds at 137.61 mph beating Miles Hauer of Seattle, Wash.
