SEVERANCE, TAYLOR QUALIFY ON TOP AT WOODBURN LUCAS RACE
WOODBURN, Ore. -- Qualifying is complete at the 30th Annual Les Schwab Challenge NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series. Joey Severance qualified on top in Top Alcohol Dragster, while Dennis Taylor outran the field in Top Alcohol Funny Car. This is the fifth of six Northwest Division Lucas Oil Races making Sunday's eliminations crucial for racers to earn points toward Divisional and National titles as the summer winds down.
Severance of Spanaway, Wash., showed promise qualifying with a pass of 5.452 seconds at 258.99 mph to get the No. 1 spot over Randy Eakins of Carson City, Nev. Eakins ran a final qualifying time of 5.501 seconds at 257.28 mph clinching the second position for Sunday's eliminations.
Taylor of Anaheim Hills, Calif., jumped to the top position outrunning the field in Top Alcohol Funny Car with a time of 5.835 seconds at 248.34 mph. Taylor edged passed No. 2 qualifier and defending Northwest Division Champion Brian Hough of Junction City, Ore., who qualified with a pass of 5.840 seconds at 249.03 mph.
Comp Eliminator pilot J.D. Zink of Chico, Calif., ran a pass of 6.917 seconds to clinch the first position while the second spot went to Post Falls, Idaho, resident Dan Barton who ran a time of 8.842 seconds. Also starting eliminations in the prime position was Super Stock racer Steven Wann of Modesto, Calif. Wann outran Steve Polack of Enumclaw, Wash., with a pass of 9.598 seconds in a '69 Barracuda.
Ahead of the field in the Stock Eliminator category was Mead, Wash., racer Wesley Libby driving a '71 Challenger and making a final qualifying pass of 10.239 seconds. Libby was able to get passed John hill of Fairbanks, Ark., who qualified in the second position.
In Top Sportsman, the racer that had the best run of the day was Todd Hoerner of Deer Park, Wash., running a time of 6.805 seconds at 206.51 mph. Hoerner qualified ahead of Frank Tamez of Yakima, Wash who ran a time of 6.962 seconds at 199.20 mph. The Top Dragster pilot that clinched the No. 1 position was Quentin Chambers of Bellingham, Wash., running a final qualifying time of 6.729 seconds at 202.56 mph edging passed No. 2 qualifier Paul Gladden of Tracy, Calif. For the second day in a row, Jeff havens of Yakima, Wash., had the best reaction time and will start eliminations as the top qualifier in the Sportsman Motorcycle category presented by Harley Davidson.
Racing continues Sunday at 9 a.m. Gates open at 8 a.m. Tickets are $25 for Adults and $5 for kids ages 6 - 14. Woodburn Dragstrip is located at 7730 Highway 219, 1 ½ miles off I-5 at Woodburn exit 271.
