30th ANNUAL LES SCHWAB CHALLENGE NHRA LUCAS OIL DRAG RACING SERIES WOODBURN DRAGSTRIP, WOODBURN, ORE.

WOODBURN DRAGSTRIP KICKS OFF LUCAS EVENT

WOODBURN, Ore. -- Racing kicked off today at the 30th Annual Les Schwab challenge NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series being held this weekend at Woodburn Dragstrip. Joey Severance qualified on top in Top Alcohol Dragster, while Alexis De Joria surpassed the field in Top Alcohol Funny Car.

Severance of Spanaway, Wash., with a pass of 5.494 seconds at 257.51 mph edged out Shawn Cowie of Richmond, B.C., who qualified with a time of 5.552 seconds at 261.24 mph.

De Joria of Venice, Calif., powered passed local racer Brian Hough of Junction City, Ore., to qualify in the first position. De Joria ran a time of 5.885 seconds at 236.53 mph while Hough qualified with a pass of 5.900 seconds at 244.16 mph.

In the Comp Eliminator category J.D. Zink of Chico, Calif., took the early lead with a time of 6.917 seconds. Zink outrun Medford, Ore, resident Mark Stewart who drove a '98 Achieva. Also topping the field was Super Stock racer Steve Polack of Enumclaw, Wash., making a pass of 8.813 seconds in a '92 Camaro. Polack took the No. 1 spot over Don Little of Westley, Calif.

Wesley Libby of Mead, Wash., finished the day on top with a time of 10.239 seconds beating out

John Hill of Fairbanks, Alaska, in Stock Eliminator. Top Sportsman pilot Todd Hoerner of Deer Park, Wash., ran a top speed of 6.805 seconds at 206.51 mph to clinch the first position over Frank Tamez of Yakima, Wash., who ran 6.962 seconds at 199.20 mph. In Top Dragster it was Quentin Chambers of Bellingham, Wash., that ran 6.729 seconds at 202.56 mph earning the top spot while Paul Gladden of Tracy, Calif., landed the No. 2 qualifying position. Sportsman Motorcycle driver Jeff Havens of Yakima, Wash., had the best reaction time allowing him to qualify in the No. 1 position.

Racing continues Saturday at 9 a.m. Gates open at 8 a.m. Tickets are $20 for Adults and $5 for kids ages 6 - 14. Woodburn Dragstrip is located at 7730 Highway 219, 1 ½ miles off I-5 at Woodburn exit 271.
