WHITELEY, RUCKMAN TAKE WINS AT SIR'S LUCAS OIL DRAG RACING SERIES EVENT; TUCSON'S LANNIE ALSO SCORES
TUCSON, Ariz. -- The two-day NHRA Pacific division Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event presented by Budweiser came to a close tonight at Southwestern Int'l Raceway where a pair of Grand Junction, Colo., residents led the winners. Jim Whiteley scored the win in Top Alcohol Dragster and Terry Ruckman carried his No. 1 qualifying effort to the win in Top Alcohol Funny Car. Joining them in the winner's circle was Tucson's Tom Lannie who earned the win in Sportsman Motorcycle.
Whiteley, who qualified in the No. 3 spot, saved his best run of the weekend for the final round when he faced off against Bluffdale, Utah's Cody Perkins. Whiteley's 5.311-second, 268.65 mph lap was more than enough to cover Perkins's 5.477-second, 258.42 mph effort. For Perkins, this was his second final-round appearance in as many weeks after scoring runner-up points at Firebird Int'l Raceway in Chandler.
Ruckman, who is in his second race in the Top Alcohol Funny Car category, made his best lap of the day in the final round. His 5.702-second, 251.44 mph pass was just enough to get by Paul Anderson of Erie, Colo. Anderson, the reigning West Central division champion, laid down a 5.712-second run at 246.66 mph.
Lannie qualified in the No. 4 spot and rode his '83 Suzuki to the win over Jay Matthews of Henderson, Nev. Lannie ran 8.940 seconds at 144.53 mph to Henderson's 7.754-second, 164.81 mph pass.
Jim Cowan, Dewey, Ariz., earned the win in Comp Eliminator beating out the defending division champion Dean Carter of Glendale, Ariz. In Super Stock, Jimmy DeFrank, Chatsworth, Calif., won, beating Mark Faul of Tacoma, Wash. Mike Johnson, Beaumont, Calif., beat San Luis Obispo, Calif., racer Kyle Rizzoli in the Stock Eliminator final, and Steve Whitfield, Littleton, Colo., got the Super Comp win over Jeff Cheney, Cambridge, Minn. In Super Gas, Mitch Mustard, Arvada, Colo., drove around Pacific division champion Val Torres of Valinda, Calif., for the win. Defending division Super Street champion Dwight Downing, Glendale, Ariz., picked up his first win of the season, beating Gary Hardee, Cressey, Calif., in the final. Wayne Newman, Lancaster, Calif., beat Tom Barnes, Buckeye, Ariz., in the Top Sportsman final, and Phoenix's Kevin Kleineweber grabbed the win in Top Dragster, beating Larry Scarth, Manhattan Beach, Calif., in the final round.
