TOYOTA DRIVERS SWEEP NITRO TOP SPOTS AT WINTERNATIONALS;
DIXON SETS NATIONAL TOP FUEL RECORD, PEDGREGON'S CAMRY ON TOP IN FC
POMONA, Calif. (February 26, 2011) -- Larry Dixon established a new national record in Top Fuel, while Cruz Pedregon ran the third-quickest time in Funny Car history as they swept the top spots in qualifying for the season-opening NHRA Winternationals at the Auto Club Dragway at Pomona on Saturday.
Dixon's record-setting 3.770-second run came on the final qualifying pass of the session and snared the defending Top Fuel champion his ninth pole position in the last 20 races. The performance picked up right where Dixon left off a year ago when he dominated the series in winning 12 races on the way to winning the championship by more than 100 points. Pedregon didn't set a national record, but he did register the third-quickest pass in Funny Car history as he continued a run strong that has seen him qualify in the top six in each of the last 11 races.
His 4.015-second run was the fastest of his career and marked his 40th number one qualifying effort. The day featured strong runs from throughout the Toyota contingent.
Antron Brown, who won last year's Top Fuel finale at Pomona, placed second on Saturday after turning the quickest time on Thursday's opening day of qualifying. Brown also was the fastest qualifier in Thursday's session. Dixon's Al-Anabi Racing teammate Del Worsham placed fifth while making his return to the Top Fuel ranks. He was followed by Shawn Langdon in sixth and Morgan Lucas in ninth.
