TOPEKA, Kan. - Defending Division 5 Federal Mogul Dragster Champion David Wells lost a close race on a holeshot to A/Fuel racer Keith Stark in the second round of the Advance Auto Parts Nationals at Heartland Park in Topeka, Kan.

Wells, who is in charge of mechanical operations at his family's ice cream factory in LeMars, Iowa, qualified his Blue Bunny Ice Cream/"Plain Vanilla" entry third with an elapsed time of 5.553 at 257.78 miles per hour. In round one, Wells defeated Dana Stripe with a 5.583 at 255.29 miles per hour before losing to Stark in round two. Wells made the quickest Blown Alcohol Dragster pass of the weekend with a 5.493 at 257.09 mph, but just couldn't catch Stark's holeshot 5.522 at 252.47.

"I just lost my concentration a little bit when Stark deep staged on me," said Wells. "I wasn't paying attention and he got me on the tree. I had actually caught him at around the 330' mark, but his car really started to move around 600' and drove back around me and stayed that way the rest of the track."

Wells will move to the next event on the NHRA trail, the Autozone Nationals presented by Pennzoil in Memphis, Tenn., where he will be looking for redemption, along with the win.

"It might be a little bit tougher this weekend in Memphis, because I expect a few more A/Fuel cars will show up," Wells commented. "If the weather turns cold where they can make a lot of power, we might have a problem. If it is mediocre weather, I think we can run right there with them."
