Troy Has First Round Exit

Troy Coughlin and his Jeg's Mail Order Chevy Cavalier qualified in the No. 16 position for the NHRA O'Reilly Summer Nationals. This was the fourth straight event the 39-year-old second-generation driver has qualified for this season.

Coughlin was focused on having a very productive day behind the wheel of his factory hot rod. He scored his second professional victory in 2002 and posted a runner-up finish in 1999 at this event.

In the opening round Troy Coughlin faced off against No. 1 qualifier and former Pro Stock Truck driver Steve Johns. The advantage off of the starting line went to the yellow and black Jeg's Mail Order entry by .006 seconds (.075 to .081). Coughlin moved around down track and the car favored the right side of the groove. The car struggled to return to the center of the groove and the win light came on for Johns. Coughlin ran 6.907 at 199.37 mph.

"I knew we left the starting line first," said Coughlin. "The car moved around down track and just never recovered. We will head back to the shop and start getting ready for our hometown race at National Trail Raceway just outside of Columbus Ohio in two weeks."
