Tony Pedregon Advances To Semifinals At Heartland Park
Topeka, Kan., May 30, 2004 -- Defending Funny Car champion Tony Pedregon advanced the Quaker State/"Shrek 2" Chevrolet Monte Carlo to the semifinals today for the NHRA Nationals at Heartland Park in Topeka, Kansas.
Pedregon powered past Jeff Arend in the first round of eliminations with an elapsed time of 4.800 seconds at 313.22 mph, the second quickest time of the session. In the second round it was Tommy Johnson Jr. who Pedregon defeated on a holeshot, leaving the line first with a .061 reaction time to Johnson's .092 seconds, crossing the stripe with an elapsed time of 4.834 seconds at 279.96 mph to Johnson's quicker elapsed time of 4.826 seconds at 322.42 mph.
In the semifinal match up, Pedregon faced Eric Medlen for the third time this season in race day competition. They left the line with identical reaction times but Pedregon dropped a cylinder and Medlen crossed the finish line with an elapsed time of 4.796 seconds at 319.52 mph to Pedregon's elapsed time of 4.933 seconds at 280.02 mph.
"We had a supercharger that wasn't up to par in the semifinals that cost us the win," said Pedregon. "We were running on seven cylinders and we just didn't have enough power. We do feel good about advancing some rounds today. We gained some ground on the competition and we continue to make progress. Whenever you make progress that makes for a good weekend. We've got a great team here with Dickie (Venables) and Kurt (Elliott) making the calls, we're just knocking on the door for that first victory."
Pedregon remains ninth in the NHRA POWERade points standings just 42 points out of the top-five.
The next event for the Quaker State racing team will be at National Trail Raceway in Columbus Ohio on June 11-14.
