JOHNSON JR. DRIVES TO NO. 12 POSITION SATURDAY AT TOPEKA
TOPEKA, Kan. (May 27, 2006) Tommy Johnson Jr. raced his Don "the Snake" Prudhomme-owned Skoal RacingSM Chevy Funny Car to the No. 12 qualifying position Saturday at Heartland Park Topeka after recording! a qualifying-best run of 4.933-seconds.
The seven-time NHRA winner made three solid qualifying passes under hot, tricky conditions at Heartland Park with his best effort coming Friday evening under the lights at Heartland Park when Johnson used a tune-up from crew chief Mike Green to drive to a performance of 4.933 seconds at 303.71 mph. He also recorded runs of 4.967 and 5.102 seconds. It is the 14th time that Johnson has qualified 12th in his career and the 47th consecutive event in which he has made the 16-car field.
"You never want to qualify in the bottom half of the field, but we missed it just a little bit on the night run," Johnson said. "I do like the fact that the last two races that we've won have been from the 12th position. I think we've got a good car for race day, especially on a difficult track. I think we'll make a good, solid effort on race day."
The Iowa native will match-up against No. 5 qualifier Whit Bazemore in the opening round of Funny Car eliminations on Sunday morning at Heartland Park. Johnson, a two-time finalist of the Topeka race, is 10-12 in his career against Bazemore.
