TOPEKA, Kan. -- In the opening round of Pro Stock car eliminations at the 14th annual NHRA O'Reilly Summer Nationals presented by Castrol Syntec at Heartland Park Topeka, the ninth of 23 national events on the NHRA POWERade® Drag Racing Series, Team Koretsky driver Richie Stevens, from New Orleans, faced Allen Johnson, from Greenville, Tenn.
Stevens qualified his Valspar Refinish/Snap-On Pontiac Grand Am 12th, with an elapsed time of 6.874 seconds, while Johnson qualified fifth recording a pass of 6.859 seconds at 201.70 mph.
With a slight advantage at the starting light and identical elapsed times at the finish lights, Stevens earned his first round win of the 2002 season over Johnson. Stevens' reaction time was .464 seconds to .467 seconds for Johnson. Stevens led from start to finish, but Johnson was right by his side from start to finish. At 60-foot Stevens led by .011 second. By half-track, Stevens was ahead by .016 seconds. Then, at the finish line, Stevens' Valspar Refinish/Snap-On Pontiac Grand Am took the win light by .0044 seconds, or about 16 inches.
In the quarterfinals, Mark Whisnant, from Stockbridge, Ga., left first. It was a .429 second reaction time for Whisnant to a .442 second reaction time for Stevens. With Stevens running the Heartland Park quarter-mile in 6.929 seconds and Whisnant covering the distance in 6.936 seconds, the win went to Whisnant with a margin of victory of .0063 seconds, or about 18 inches.
The parity in Pro Stock car can best be illustrated by the fact that in nine race this season Pro Stock car has seen nine different winner. Troy Coughlin won today's event defeating Mark Whisnant.

It's back-to-back weekends again, the third of three races in a row, for the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series. Team Koretsky now moves to Joliet, Ill., about 30 miles out of Chicago, for the NHRA Chicagoland Dodge Dealers Nationals at Route 66 Raceway. Professional qualifying gets underway on Friday, May 31st, with final eliminations scheduled for Sunday, June 2nd.
