John Force, Castrol GTXÂ® Ford Mustang Pro Funny Car: Qualified: 3rd at 4.920, 303.84 mph Racing Result: Beat Ron Capps, Del Worsham, Tony Pedregon and Tommy Johnson Jr. Noteworthy: Although he has not yet mathematically clinched his ninth Winston Championship, Force has realistically done so. In winning for the ninth time this year and 78th time in his career, he is 319 points ahead of teammate Tony Pedregon and 441 points ahead of Whit Bazemore with four races remaining. Maximum points awarded to an event winner is 118. Minimum for a race qualifier is 31. John said: "We knew Tommy Jr. and (Crew Chief Wes) Cerny were capable of a big number so we couldn't afford to pull it back. Austin Coil horsepower brought us home again."
Tony Pedregon, Castrol SYNTECâ„¢ Ford Mustang Pro Funny Car: Qualified: 2nd at 4.894, 305.01 mph Racing Result: Beat Bob Gilbertson, Jim Epler; lost to John Force. Noteworthy: Tony maintained his advantage over third place Whit Bazemore in his bid to assure Team Castrol its third 1-2 finish in the lat four years. Tony said: "It was a pretty good weekend for us although I wish we had given John a better race in the semifinals. I think we fixed some of our clutch problems and we feel good about the last four races."
