TOPEKA, Kan. - In her last two outings in Topeka, Heartland Park has been a pretty good track for NHRA Federal Mogul Dragster driver Shelly Howard. At last year's Advance Auto Parts Nationals, Howard went to the semifinals, and just three weeks ago at the Division 5 race here, she qualified No. 1 and went all the way to the finals before transmission failure cost her the race. With that track record, Howard hopes to keep her success alive during this weekend's Advance Auto Parts Nationals.
Howard, a registered nurse from Tulsa, Okla., hopes to use consistency as she has all year to find success this weekend. She also hopes to stay in the top five in national points as well.
"We hope to repeat in consistency and my performance as a driver," said Howard. "There are some quick, fast cars here, but we can concentrate on is our own operation. If we stay consistent, hopefully we can go a few rounds."
With good cool air conditions forecasted for this weekend, Howard feels that she may be able to get her Tom Conway tuned Blown Alcohol Dragster into the 5.40's.
"If we can consistently run in the 5.40's, that would be nice," stated Howard. "I think consistency is more important than trying to go out there and kill the e.t. So consistent .40's or low .50's will make us happy."
The Federal Mogul Dragsters will have two qualifying runs on Friday, with the third qualifying session and first round following on Saturday. Final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday.
