SCOTT PALMER QUALIFIES FOR FIRST NHRA TOP FUEL RACE

TOPEKA, Kan., May 24, 2003 - Scott Palmer was excited. And he had good reason to be. Palmer, the Highlandville Top Fuel driver, qualified for his first NHRA POWERade Series event Saturday - the O'Reilly Summer Nationals at Heartland Park Topeka - in his fourth try this season. "Everybody on our O'Reilly Auto Parts team is excited," said. "We ran our fastest speed to half-track on our last qualifying run (Saturday), 260 mph, before we had a blower problem." Palmer's best effort, 4.883 seconds at 287.90 mph, put him 14th in the 16-car field. He meets No. 3 qualifier Cory McClenathan (4.577 at 315.57 mph) in Sunday's first round. "I'm happy to be racing anybody," Palmer added. "I wasn't pleased with the way the car ran at our last race at Atlanta (May 4) so we changed our combination all around to run better. It felt like a race car during qualifying." Palmer had competed in the alcohol Funny Car category prior to stepping up to Top Fuel this year.
