SCOTT GEOFFRION LOSES TO YATES IN FIRST ROUND AT TOPEKA

TOPEKA, Kan., May 25, 2003 - Scott Geoffrion liked the performance of his Hurley Blakeney Racing Ford Escort ZX2 Sunday in the O'Reilly Summer Nationals at Heartland Park Topeka.

He didn't like his, however.

Geoffrion lost to Jim Yates in the opening round despite producing quicker and faster numbers. The difference came at the starting line where Yates had a .018 reaction to Geoffrion's .063.

"It's no fun getting beat that way," Geoffrion said. "The car is
awesome. It made its best run of the weekend against Yates, and it was
in the bad lane. We learned some much in the last two races, especially
in the tune-up area. That will help us as the season goes on."

Geoffrion's quickest qualifying run came on his first trip down the track, 6.857 seconds at 201.10 mph, and he started 10th. The car was plagued by tire shake and he wasn't able to rid himself of the trouble until Sunday's eliminations.

Geoffrion is seventh in the standings with 375 points.

The San Clemente, Calif., driver won't be able to dwell on Sunday's result because the Nitro Fish Ford ZX2 will be back in action Friday through Sunday at Joliet, Ill., in the Route 66 Nationals.

Qualified: No. 10, 6.857 seconds at 201.10 mph

First round: Jim Yates, 6.857 at 201.43 def. Geoffrion, 6.837 at 201.94
