RANDY ANDERSON TRIES TO KEEP IT SIMPLE DURING RAPID RISE IN FUNNY CAR TOPEKA, Kan. -- There's only one thing in NHRA Winston Drag Racing that has climbed as fast as Randy Anderson the last six weeks: his pressure level. Anderson, a rookie from Ontario, Calif., climbed from a tie for 15th to a tie for second in the NHRA Winston Funny Car point standings during a three-race span in April and May in the Parts America Pontiac Firebird. The rapid rise was fueled by consecutive victories over defending NHRA Winston champion John Force at the Fram Nationals and the Lone Star Nationals, and a semifinal finish at the rain- delayed Pennzoil Nationals. That success also has intensified the spotlight on Anderson. He has gone from a promising rookie to a target and a legitimate contender for a Winston championship -- all in six weeks. "Going back to the Pennzoil Nationals, I felt a lot more pressure," Anderson said. "I think I got caught up in the whole picture. I sat back afterward and said I was putting more pressure on myself than I needed to be. "I don't want to get caught up in the points. Each week, I just want to concentrate on that weekend. If I drive better and improve at every race, the end results will be good." That relaxed, focused approach will make Anderson a contender for his third victory of the season at the fifth annual, $1,509,950 Western Auto Parts America Nationals presented by Slick 50, May 29-June 1 at Heartland Park Topeka. The race is the ninth event of the 22-event, $30- million NHRA Winston Drag Racing Series in 1997. Anderson is well-equipped to handle the stress of a championship race. He emerged from tight races to win consecutive NHRA Winston Top Alcohol Funny Car titles in 1993-94. "I don't think you'll see anybody on this team get overconfident," Anderson said.
