Pawuk DNQs, More Power Needed
TOPEKA, KS 5/30/04 "Last week we talked about needing more power in the back half of the track," said Mark "Cowboy" Pawuk following qualifying at the O'Reilly's Summer Nationals. "Well, you've just seen graphic evidence of how important that is. We had decent elapsed times in every session, but our mile-an-hour is way, way off the pace. Look at our speed in the fourth session. Only 196 and change. That's definitely not good enough.
"I'm not sure if we damaged our race motor early in the going, but we're going to be heading back to Ohio right away so we can check things on the dyno. We fell way off the pace early on, and even though we didn't find anything here at the track, Marcus (Bowen, crew chief) and I both think there's just got to be something wrong inside the engine.
"You know, I have never complained about track conditions, but I'm going to now. I know NHRA and the Safety Safari did everything they could to make things right, but I think it really says something when 14 of the 16 qualifiers came out of the same lane.
"I know we all get two chances in each lane, but compounding our problems was the fact that when we did get in the good lane we had one helluva head wind.
"That's it for the grumbling, 'cause it doesn't do any good anyway. We're heading for our shop in Ohio, and we're gonna be deep inside this engine first thing in the morning. We've got a little over a week until the Pontiac Excitement Nationals presented by Summit Racing, and we're going to be ready."
