EDWARDS TRYING TO FIND COMFORT ZONE IN PRO STOCK TOPEKA, Kan. -- There's a good reason why Mike Edwards is struggling this season to find the success that helped him become co-NHRA Winston Rookie of the Year in 1996. He's driven almost as many cars as a valet parking attendant this year. Edwards, from Broken Arrow, Okla., has raced in three different Pro Stock cars this season, hampering the JK Racing team's efforts to find a consistent chassis and engine combination. Edwards started the season in a Pontiac Firebird, but that car was destroyed in a crash at the Fram Nationals in mid-April. He switched to an Oldsmobile Cutlass for the Pennzoil Nationals and then jumped into his current Firebird starting at the Lone Star Nationals earlier this month. "We just need to get a handle on a combination and be comfortable with the combination," Edwards said. "We've got good power to run in the top five or six. We've got to get our combination and our confidence together." That process will continue for Edwards at the fifth annual, $1,509,950 Western Auto Parts America Nationals presented by Slick 50 at Heartland Park Topeka. The race is the ninth event of the 22-event, $30- million NHRA Winston Drag Racing Series in 1997. Edwards won three races and finished third in the NHRA Winston point standings as a rookie last season. This year, he is 13th with a runner-up finish at the Mac Tools Gatornationals. But earlier this month Edwards showed glimpses of last year's form, qualifying No. 2 at the Lone Star Nationals and finishing runner-up to defending NHRA Winston champion Jim Yates in the DuPont Pro Stock Challenge special event. The comfort zone may be approaching. "It's been tough on all of us, especially me," Edwards said. "But we've done it. We know we can do it. We've just got to turn it around."
