Topeka, Kan. (Sept. 30) - Brian "Lump" Self, driver of the Roof-Tec Chevrolet S-10, came to the Heartland Park in Topeka, Kan. confident about his chances of qualifying and racing his Pro Stock Truck at the 12th Annual Advance Auto Parts NHRA Nationals.
In the first session of qualifying Lump drove his truck to a 7.632 / 175.32 mph which would be good for the 14th position on the eliminations ladder.
When eliminations get under way on Sunday morning Lump will be paired up against Greg Stanfield. Self and Stanfield have a long-standing friendly rivalry, which usually ends up in a burn down war on the starting line.
All drivers have a ritual that they go through when they are staging and launching their trucks. Neither of these drivers likes to stage their trucks first. The last time the two met was earlier this year in Chicago, Ill. the ensuing burn-down would last 1.37 minutes. Stanfield, who was on the verge of overheating, would finally give in and stage first. The battle of nerves paid off for Lump with a win.
"Having Greg in Round 1 is okay with me," said Self. "Greg is a good shoe, and he has got me covered on ET. Tomorrow I have to get whatever advantage I can on the tree. A burn-down could mess with his head just enough so he makes a mistake. A mistake on his part could give me the advantage I need at the starting line. That is what I need to beat him.
"The mental advantage helps, but we also found a problem we were having with the truck in the last round of qualifying. We corrected it. So ET wise I think we will be a little quicker.
"We came here to race whether we kill them on the tree or kill them with ET. We want to go rounds tomorrow. However we get the win doesn't make any difference to me. A win is a win. That's the name of the game."
Eliminations at the 12th Annual Advance Auto Parts NHRA Nationals begin at 10:00 AM CST on Sunday Oct. 1.
