TOPEKA, Kan., (June 2, 2007) -- Team Kalitta teammates Scott Kalitta and Dave Grubnic both posted solid qualifying spots for their respective nitro-fueled Funny Car and Top Fuel professional classes for tomorrow's final eliminations at the O'Reilly NHRA Summer Nationals at Heartland Park Topeka in Topeka, Kan.
Scott Kalitta, the son of team owner and drag racing legend Connie "the Bounty Hunter" Kalitta, will try to guide his yellow and red DHL Toyota Solara Funny Car to his seventh trip to the HPT winner's circle tomorrow from the No. 9 (4.874 seconds, 316.45 mph) slot on the Funny Car eliminations ladder. Scott's first round opponent is No. 8 qualifier Jeff Arend, 4.873 sec., 316.90 mph. Scott, a two-time Top Fuel World Champion (1994-'95), won the title trophy in Topeka a track record six times while driving the longer wheel-based nitro runners.
Native Australian Dave Grubnic, driver of the black and blue Zantrex-3 Top Fueler, will start his attempt to capture Topeka glory again from the No. 9 (4.636 sec., 315.19 mph) qualifying position in the 16-car eliminations field for the long, skinny cars. He will face off against No. 8 qualifier Morgan Lucas, 4.619 sec., 323.04 mph, in tomorrow's opening stanza. Grubnic became the first non-native North American driver to win an NHRA national event in Top Fuel in Topeka in 2005.
Topeka Top Fuel defending champion Doug Kalitta, driver of the bright red Mac Tools Top Fuel dragster, will begin the defense of his HPT crown from the No. 13 qualifying spot, 4.657 sec., 301.27 mph. Doug, the 2006 Top Fuel POWERade points runner-up, will match-up against Rod Fuller, the No. 4 qualifier (4.566 sec., 321.42 mph), in round one Sunday.
Hillary Will, driver of the Kalitta Motorsports-managed, Ken Black-owned KB Racing LLC Top Fueler, qualified in the No. 11 position for eliminations. She will race against Bernstein, the No. 6 qualifier, in round one tomorrow.
