TOLIVER QUALIFIES ROCKSTAR ENERGY DRINK FUNNY CAR NO. 6 IN TOPEKA

TOPEKA, Kan. (May 31, 2008) -- Jerry Toliver qualified the Rockstar Energy Drink Dodge Charger R/T Funny Car in No. 6 for the NHRA Summer Nationals at Heartland Park Topeka.

Toliver began the qualifying rounds with a run of 7.293 seconds at 95.64 mph (good for No. 12 at the time) that ended with the car in flames following an engine explosion. The Rockstar Energy Drink team quickly repaired the car between rounds and Toliver came back to post a 4.917/298.27 on his second attempt to jump into No. 6. The California native made two full runs in the Kansas heat today, recording a 5.026/292.71 and a 4.946/296.57, which kept him in the No. 6 spot.

He'll have lane choice over No. 11 qualifier Tommy Johnson Jr. during the first round of eliminations on Sunday.

"The weekend started out bad with a big fire on the first lap," said Toliver. "We bounced back and ran a 4.91 and that just shows the depth of this Rockstar Energy Drink team. Today we went down the track twice. On the last lap we ran a 4.94 in the heat and that's good. That shows that we have a good tune-up for race day.

"That's the good thing about this team," Toliver added. "The Rockstar boys dug down deep and worked hard and they never gave up and that's what it takes to be a winning team. This thing is not over by a long shot. We're not that far out of the top 10 (105 points) and that's all it takes to get into the Countdown to the Championship." The Countdown for the top 10 begins after the U.S. Nationals on Labor Day weekend.

"It's so important to be in the top half of the field," Toliver continued. "We've been in the lower half of the field all year, except for the season-opener in Pomona. We've struggled and we've stumbled. Hopefully tomorrow will be our day. I'm going to go home happy, have a good dinner and a good night's sleep and come back and kick some ass tomorrow."
