TOPEKA, Kan. - Federal Mogul Dragster pilot Shelly Howard bounced back from a tough first round loss at the last Division 4 race in Noble, Okla., with a strong semifinal finish during the Advance Auto Parts Nationals at Heartland Park in Topeka, Kan.
The registered nurse from Tulsa, Okla., qualified No. 4 with an elapsed time of 5.558 at 252.80 miles per hour. On her way to the semifinals, she took out Chris Dakin in the first round with a 5.551 at 253.71 mph, then Bruce Bowler in round two with a 5.543 at 251.34 mph before losing to eventual winner Gary Ormsby Jr., the semifinals. Howard took the starting line advantage, but Ormsby just edged her out with a 5.521 at 253.66 mph to her right there 5.597 at 253.18 mph.
Howard said, "We are happy with the showing we made this weekend, the year seems to be turning around a little. We had tireshake problems all weekend, but never could get a handle on it, and it finally ended up biting us against Ormsby. They ran a good race and this was their weekend."
From Topeka, Howard will move on to the next race on the NHRA tour, the Autozone Nationals presented by Pennzoil in Memphis, Tenn. With tuning assistance from two time World Champion Tom Conway, Howard feels confident of her chances for her first win of the year.
"We always go into every race with the attitude of 'it's a new ballgame' regardless of how good or bad you did at the last race," said Howard. "There is no telling how good this car will run if we can get the tire shake to go away, so we're just going to take it one run at a time."
