Topeka, Kan., May 27, 2001 - Every once in a while it happens - a race weekend where some things don't seem to go right.
It happened to Doug Herbert and the Snap-on Racing Top Fuel dragster team during the Advance Auto Nationals at Heartland Park Topeka, last Friday through Sunday.
Herbert did have good qualifying results at all but one of the previous eight NHRA Winston Series races this year, but he didn't this time. He made three runs - a broken clutch part prevented him from completing the last one - and had a best of only 5.511 seconds and started 14th.
Herbert's best run of the weekend came in the first round against Gary Scelzi, 4.716 seconds at 285.65 mph. However, Scelzi had the round's quickest time, 4.587 seconds and won easily.
"We just weren't able to get a handle on the tune-up," Herbert said. "We changed some things around before the first round and the car went down the track."
Had that run come in qualifying, Herbert would've started from the No. 9 position and had an easier first round foe.
All that is moot, however. But the good news is the Snap-on dragster responded to the tune-up changes and Herbert and crew chief Larry Frazier may have something to work with going into the Lucas Oil Products Nationals at Joliet, Ill., Friday through Sunday. He's eighth in points with 407.
Qualified: No. 14, 5.511 at seconds at 182.50 mph.
First round: Gary Scelzi def. Herbert
Race winners: Kenny Bernstein, Top Fuel; Tony Pedregon, Funny Car; Ron Krisher, Pro Stock.
